guy being arrestedWhat to expect when you are placed in Federal custody prior to trial, or after sentencing, prior to being placed in the BOP

Prior to being taken to a federal prison, a prisoner once convicted will usually spend between 3 months to 2 years in a county, or Federal jail. The jail system in the United States is deplorable at its very best.

This writer was placed in 4 jails after he was sentenced, before arriving at a Federal prison.

The whole ordeal took about 3 months. The first jail was an all "new" Florida county jail. The food was decent and a prisoner could receive a visit through a glass separation partition. A local collect call could cost up to $10.00 to the family while a collect long distant call could cost the family up to $50.00 for 15 minutes. This writer spent 7 days at the new jail and there was not time enough to arrange for a family visit.

This writer was then transferred to a Federal Jail (called Morgan Street Jail) in Tampa, Florida where there were 16 prisoners in two tiny rooms. One room was full of bunk beds about 3 feet apart. The other room was about 12' X 12' and housed 2 extra large steel picnic tables for prisoners to eat on; one TV on Education Channels and 2 telephones. There were 2 toilets in open view next to the bunk beds and 2 showers and 2 sinks for 16 prisoners. Both areas were in open view with bars so the guards, male and female, could walk by and see everything going on in the 2 small rooms.

At least once a week a public tour was brought through the Federal jail. These tours consisted of the public with children, viewing the Federal inmates unclothed and going to the bathroom at times.

The prices to make telephone calls at any jail averaged $10.00 for a local call and from $25.00 to $50.00 for long distance. The visiting at Morgan St. Federal Jail was picking up a telephone in a little room and looking into a TV monitor speaking with your loved ones who were downstairs in a room looking through a different TV monitor. No Federal prisoner was allowed to physically see their loved ones in person.

The food served was less than horrible, while the amount of food served was just enough to sustain life. The food was served to the prisoners in containers in their tiny 2 rooms, housing the 16 prisoners. No Federal prisoner was allowed to leave their 2 room housing, except for 1 hour, 3 days a week to go into an enclosed walking area; about the size of a basketball court. There were usually 50 to 100 federal prisoners in that walking area during each 1-hour session.

The only exception to the rule was if a prisoner needed to use the law library which consisted of outdated everything. The rule for the use of the law library was a prisoner was allowed the use of the law library 3 hours a week, if the person that was in charge of the law library showed up. He showed up on an average of every other week. The law library; which by law must be available to Federal prisoners, was a very serious joke.

This writer met Federal prisoners that had been held at Morgan St. Jail for over 2 years. Some were held there without trial for over 6 months. There was no question some of their Government prisoners were innocent. However, they were going to be found guilty anyway. The justice system is so corrupt within the United States, there is little to no chance to win for the innocent. Medical in many jails is non-existent and prisoners die needlessly as a result.

If a person is seriously ill coming into Federal custody within the Federal jail system; there is a good chance the person will degenerate or die, before they ever get into the BOP.

Dental care in the Federal Jail System is close to non-existent also.

A person with most any kind of medical problem will in fact degenerate rapidly when being placed into Federal custody. The Federal judges know this, but hand out harsh sentences to the sick and handicapped as if they were giving candy to a baby.

Fights in jail are frequent and rarely reported.
